"Beatrice Fairfax" is a crime series, from which a single episode is included in our program to illustrate the work and contributions of Olive Thomas, a star of Silent Hall of Fame. 

"Beatrice Fairfax" consists of 15 self-contained stories.  The main character (Grace Darling) is a crime-fighting lady in a newspaper advice column, who solves her readers' problems.

This is episode 10, entitled "Play Ball!".  A certain gambler wishes to make a big gain in a baseball bet by eliminating the star player of the team favored to win.

"The Man Without a Country" is a drama, featuring Florence La Badie, a star of Silent Hall of Fame. 

This was last film of Florence La Badie - she died 34 days after the film's release as a result of injuries sustained in an auto accident.  She was only 29.

"Tol'able David" is a rousing drama of small-town America starring Richard Barthelmess.

David (Richard Barthelmess) is a young fellow, who is constantly reminded that he is not mature enough for a grown-man's job.  Then dramatic events occur and he has the opportunity to prove himself when he is pushed to the limit in circumstances, which very few "real men" can handle.

"Tol'able David" was added to the National Film Registry in 2007 as being deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

"Ramona", A Story of the White Man’s Injustice to the Indian, is a short drama directed by D. W. Griffith, featuring Billy Bitzer, a star of Silent Hall of Fame. Robert Harron also gets credit, but it is difficult to spot him.

Mary Pickford plays a Hispanic girl who falls in love with an Indian.  Undeterred by the vehement objections of her mother, she elopes with her man.  Then when white settlers drive the Indians from their homes the young family meets a tragic end.

"Vanity Fair" is a historical drama, based on the classic English novel written by William Thackeray, featuring Shirley Mason, a star of Silent Hall of Fame.  

Shirley Mason was 15 y.o. and played the role of the young Becky Sharp.  Directors obviously took notice of her performance, because in 1917 she appeared in 17 feature films, in many of them playing the star role.

 

Viewers are advised to read the plot that follows before proceeding with the film.

"Children Who Labor" is a short social drama produced for The National Child Labor Committee.  We have included this film in our program to illustrate the work and contributions of Shirley Mason, a star of Silent Hall of Fame.

An 11 y.o. Shirley Mason has a child's role in the film.  Nonetheless seeing her in any role is a rarity that must be appreciated considering that very few of her films survive.
